January Schedule

We are ready to begin our year in 2010 and I just wanted to let everyone know that we have a standard schedule for the entire month of January. This means practices will be Monday and Wednesday from 7:00-8:30 PM in Roseville, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-9:00 PM in Sacrament0, and Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 PM and Saturdays from 12:00-2:30 PM in Folsom. This is the month to get in as many practices as possible to prepare for the upcoming year. For some students this means competing for the first time or building on your experience for the future and for the intermediate and advanced students this means that you will now begin your journey to state championships, junior nationals, and senior nationals. I expect big things from all of you in the next year so let's start 2010 with the right attitude and ready to work hard. The entire coaching staff will be ready to help all of you to improve every practice.

November 2009 Schedule

I just wanted to update everyone early about the November schedule so that you can all plan your month out. We will be going to the Bojuka Tournament on Sunday November 1. This tournament is in Monterey and many of the families are planning on staying in the area Saturday night. There is also a tournament in Palo Alto on Sunday November 8. This tournament was not finalized until this week so I will not be going to Palo Alto. As always our competitors are welcome to go to any tournaments but I want you all to be aware of which tournaments I will be attending. We will also be taking Thursday November 26 off of practice to observe the Thanksgiving holiday. All other practices will be on the normal schedule.

I also want to gauge interest from everyone regarding the 2009 USJA Winter Nationals in December. This is a growing event that will take place on the weekend of December 4-6 in southern California. It is held the same weekend of the CCSF Tournament. If we have enough interested people in going to the USJA's we can do that, if there is not enough interest then we will schedule the CCSF Tournament on Sunday December 6. Please give me an idea of what everyone wants to do for these events.

Every year October is the month when we return to our competition schedule after a few short months off. This year is no different, as we begin the 2009/2010 tournament season with The Capitol Open on Sunday October 11, at Consumnes River College. This year the tournament is a week later than normal and I expect to see many of our students at the competition. Even if you are not competing it would be nice to see students show up to encourage fellow team members. If you are new, this would be an excellent venue for you to watch a judo tournament and see what it is like to compete as a judoka. As always with Sunday tournaments there will be no practice the Saturday before. The rest of the October schedule will be normal days and times. Saturday Schedule Change

There has been a change in schedule for this Saturday June 6. We will have normal practice from 12:00 to 2:30 as scheduled. The change will be for our meet and greet with Chuck Liddell. He will be attending the Sacramento Monarchs game and will not be at the gym until 4:00 that day. I know this is a change from what the schedule was but we must adapt due to the conflict. I am hoping to keep as many students at the gym as possible to present Chuck with a special award of recognition for his efforts to Team Sacramento. There will be a BBQ at Folsom MMA that day so everyone will be able to take a rest and eat. If there are students that need to leave after practice and cannot stay until 4:00 I understand, but I am hoping that we can keep a group there to do some demonstrations and meet Chuck. Please let me know if you have any questions, and wear your white gi for pictures.

May Schedule

I just wanted to give an update to everyone on what the May schedule will be. This will be a very important month to continue training for the Sate Championships (May 22-24) and then the two Junior Nationals during the summer. Practices will be normal schedule and Saturday practices as I have noted earlier have changed time and location. We must all train hard to make sure that we give ourselves the best possible chance for success. We will take a team of about 15 competitors to the California State Championships on May 22-24 in San Diego. This will be the highlight for some of our players and the stepping stone for others going on to Junior Nationals. The final day of the month Sunday May 31 there will be a referee clinic in the Sacramento area (most likely Okubo) and I encourage all of the coaching staff to attend. I will give details as they come. I would also like to let everyone know that we will potentially be having Daiheigen sponsored workouts to prepare for Junior Nationals. There has been some interest from other clubs and I will give more information as it becomes available to me. Let's train for success and not lose the lessons that we have learned the past several months.

We have made this change to try to jump start attendance as well as open another area to judo in the Sacramento area. I am hopeful that our current students will still be able to attend practices and that we can find new members at the same time. Please take the time to make it to a Saturday practice and check out the new location. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Another scorcher at UTC tonight, but all 25 judoka worked hard.  Everybody worked kouchi-to-ouchi combinations, and a few of the advanced students did some extra work on tai otoshi and seoinage.

Everybody finished up with a few rounds of newaza and light randori.

Welcome to Brett Thompson who trained with us for the first time tonight.

Next Practice: 7:30PM tomorrow night at Cap City BJJ

Spaghetti Feed

I would like to thank everyone who donated, and volunteered for the spaghetti feed. Special thanks to:
Bides Family, Torregrosa Family, Syria, Jonel, Mina, Daniel, Kirsten, Spencer, LJ, Johnson Sensei, and the Perez Family for volunteering/donating and especially for Johnson Sensei's mom for helping me make the spaghetti. If it wasn't for her and the rest of the crew, their would not be a spaghetti feed.

White & Brown Belt Nationals

I am very proud to announce that we sent an excellent group of competitors to the White and Brown Belt Nationals in San Francisco on April 5. All of the competitors performed well and should feel good about what they have accomplished. Kyle took a dominating first place winning all three of his matches with excellent technique and plenty of power. Syria took first place defeating this years Collegiate National Champion along the way. She also had the most entertaining and competitive match of the entire tournament, receiving applause from the entire crowd upon completion. Rich did an excellent job and went against some very tough and strong competitors to take third place. It was an excellent day with some of the friends of Team Sacramento competing as well. Congratulations to Abbey (first place) and Scott (second place) for their performances. Next up Bay Isle and then it is time to get to work for State Championships in May.

Sensei Birthday Workout

Monday March 16, was the annual Sensei Birthday Workout. I went to great lengths this year to make sure that all of the attendees were able to sleep well that night. Final statistics were 41 students and one person getting sick. I will have to bring the get sick ratio up next year. I want to thank all of the students for being a part of this special occasion and I meant what I said when I told all of you that I cannot wait until next year because not only am I getting better but each and every student continues to improve before my eyes. I am excited to be the leader of Team Sacramento and you all make me feel truly blessed. I also want to thank all of the parents for the refreshments after practice and for your continued support.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Tauasa spoke to Pedro on Thursday and he is well. The surgery went very well and he is resting at home comfortably. He plans to come say hello to everyone if he is feeling up to it on Monday night at practice. Hopefully he will give all of you some energy that night since we are having Sensei Birthday Workout. Make sure that you are all ready.

March 2009 Schedule

The schedule for March is very light this year. After back to back tournaments to end February there are no full team tournaments scheduled for March. There is a tournament at Cupertino on March 1, that some players will be attending. We will have a full compliment of practices during the month and all students should look at this time as an opportunity to work hard and improve before the stretch run of State Championships, Collegiate Nationals, and Junior/Senior Nationals coming in April, May, and June. We will also have a special Sensei Birthday Workout on Monday March 16. Every student is expected to be there and make sure you are prepared to give maximum effort. If you get sick or have a difficult time you cannot say that I didn't warn you.

Cupertino Tournament Date Change

I am not sure when and why but the Cupertino Judo Club has changed the date of their tournament from March 8 to March 1. Because of this change Team Sacramento will not be attending the tournament. As always anyone who wishes to go to a tournament that we are not going to as a team is welcome to attend idividually. I will look over the schedule and try to find an alernative tournament to attend. Please forgive the confusion and stay tuned for an alternate plan for March.

We were able to talk about the tournament and individual performances. We then went to work with crash pad throwing and several good hard rounds of ne-waza. UTC also unveiled our motto on the wall so now everyone knows what day it is.

Great Clinic!!!

What a great grand opening and clinic!!!

Marcos Sensei led a spirited warm up for the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and showed some fantastic mat techniques. The BJJ session then closed with some 8 minute rounds that got the mirrors steamed up!!

The judo session was led with some history and then right into some techniques. Goodall Sensei reviewed Ippon Seoi-Nage, Morales Sensei showed Sumi-Gaeshi. Goodall Sensei then introduced Yoko-Tomoe-Nage and closed with Sasae-Tsurikomi-Ashi.

It was a great day for the exchange of techniques and ideas!!!

Grand Opening Clinic for Capital City BJJ and Team Sacramento Judo

For those who are coming tomorrow, it is important for everybody to be there around 9:45 so Marcos can start his jiu jitsu clinic at 10:00am. It's important that all the judo members attend the jiu jitsu clinic to show support for our partner organization. It would be a sign of disrespect for our members not to attend the jiu jitsu clinic.

Congratulations to Andrea and Lucas on their recent promotions.

You know, I really don't have anything to contribute other than that for now. . .

Oh yeah, good luck to Mina and Daniel who will be competing in their first BJJ tournament this weekend so we won't be at pratice this Saturday (maybe if we get out of there early enough, we'll see). But either way. . .Good luck to the first combined Team Sac/Cap City BJJ competitors!!!

February Scedule

To All,

I will begin to give a monthly schedule to everyone this month. This is intended to keep everyone involved with all team activities. I encourage all members, perents, and friends of Team Sacramento to join the blog so that you can keep up with all the news and notes involving the team.

February will be a very busy month. We will be co-hosting a clinic on February 7 at Capitol City BJJ from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This will be a great event with a true information exchange with some great instructors from all over including Cassio Werneck. The event is also a multi cultural pot luck, so please plan to stay and eat and bring a dish if you are able.

February 15 will be our annual trip to the San Jose Buddhist Tournament. This is always the number one tournament of the year and sometimes is more competitive than states or nationals in some categories.

February 22 we will be attending the very first Makimoto judo tournament in Vacaville. We wish to support this event as much as possible so competitors should be ready to go two weeks in a row.

The rest of the schedule will be as normal with practices Monday to Thursday and Saturdays. No Saturday practice on the 14 and 21 because of tournaments and no practice on the 7 because of the clinic.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thursday January 29 Practice

15 students at last nights workout. We worked three Tai otoshi combinations/variations. Bella, Ellis, and Mina showed great improvement throughout the evening. We ended class with some spirited randori. Good job!

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Another fun practice: 17 judoka. Light warmup and a bunch of work on 2-on-1 tai otoshi. Kyle led a great warmup.

Mina, Kyle, Michael, Hawk, Bella and LJ had outstanding technique.

Everybody worked hard during randori. Pickles (Kayla) was fearless in her first randori session and had a great teacher in Mina.

Jonel is on crutches and still managed to teach.
