Wednesday Practice

Incredible class tonight - 22 judoka with great energy. Tons of uchikomi, grip fighting and a variation of osotogari (shown by Sensei Pedro). Lots of fun during randori (especially for Rich a.k.a The Beast)

Luckily everybody turned their homework. Also, a special thanks to Julian and Andrea for the homemade root beer!

Next Practice: Thursday at Capital City BJJ

Don't forget to wear a WHITE GI for O-Sensei's workout on Saturday!

Monday & Tuesday Practice

Great practices Monday (26 judoka) and Tuesday (16 judoka). The next two weeks are dedicated to osotogari, pummeling, grip fighting and lots of randori (of course).

Don't forget your homework! Also, O-Sensei will be at Saturday practice this Saturday (Dec 6th)!

Next Practice: Wednesday at UTC

On a side note...
According to Kyle last month was No-shave November, and this month is Decembeard. Next month is supposedly Januhairy. Since Kyle does'nt know when NHL playoffs start (or end), lets make this deal: unless he dominates randori at O-Sensei's workout, every month will henceforth be known as Hairlesskyler or Plainvanillalegdayuary.

We also covered a couple of tricks/variations of te guruma and finished with some randori.

The picture above shows Sensei Pedro winning with te guruma at the 2008 World Masters Championships in Brussels, Belgium.

Thanks to Sensei Pedro for finding some of the new competition rules that go into effect in 2009. I believe these new rules require dogs to wear blue a gi.

Next Practice: 7:30pm Thursday at Capital City BJJ

Palo Alto Invitational

Many thanks to the Palo Alto Judo Club for a tough (and very fun) tournament in Palo Alto today.

TSJ had only 11 competitors today, but everybody fought well. Jonel and Mychal fought through injuries, and Syria was exceptional in the senior brown belt division.

Lincoln (2-2) and Tony (1-1) fought in their first tournament today and both did very well.

Practice on Monday in Roseville.

Wednesday Practice

17 bodies practicing harai goshi tonight (instruction by Teixeira Sensei). We also welcomed three new students tonight: Justin, Austin, and Dave.

Saturday practice is canceled in lieu of the Palo Alto tournament this Sunday. However, for senior students that want to participate, we'll be having a light workout at UTC this Saturday from 1-2:30pm (lots of uchi komi and nage komi).

Reminder: No Thursday Practice Downtown (November 6th)

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Tuesday Practice

Fun with harai goshi was the theme tonight (and for the for the next two weeks). Lots of nage komi and a little randori tonight (16 warm bodies).

Ira made an appearance tonight! Just as scary as he was 20 years ago but a little bit lighter... You just know he's gonna dish out some justice like it's 1989 next time (stay clear if you know what's good for you!)

Practice in Roseville Wednesday. No practice downtown Thursday.

Palo Alto tournament this Sunday - contact the coaches if you need a ride to the venue.

Great class tonight: 27 bodies. Tonight marks the start of a two-week training cycle on harai goshi (Kavanaugh Sensei got us started on the first variation).

Congratulations to everybody that competed at the Bojuka Invitational yesterday. Please send pics and/or video of matches to Tauasa when you have a chance.

Here is a video of one of Dave Henson's submission grappling matches at Marinobles a few weeks ago. Great job Dave!

Wednesday Practice

Only 19 judoka tonight, but still a great workout. Lots of uchikomi, partner drills, ukemi, and randori.

We had a little contest tonight to see who could do ukemi over the most bodies. Six-pack was the favorite going in, but, surprisingly, Jonel beat everybody by clearing nine people with room to spare - not too bad for an old man :-)

Practice downtown tomorrow night.

Bojuka Invitational Tournament in Monterey this Sunday - check the calendar for details. If you're not going down Saturday night but want to fight, contact one of the coaches about carpooling.

Monday Practice

Quick warmup, lots of work on kouchi gari (instruction by Morales Sensei), and some randori... 30 warm bodies flying around - nobody should have this much fun!

Practice downtown tomorrow night.

Great practice tonight. The mat was crowded with a total of 39 judoka.

Saturday Practice

Saturday practice went very well. The small class size (16 total) allowed a lot of one-on-one instruction.

Breakdown of today's training:
Warmup: 30 minutes
Half nelson drills: 30 minutes
Seoinage variations and transitions: 90 minutes
Randori & newaza: 30 minutes

A video compilation of today's workout is available here.

This weekend marks the end of our two-week cycle on seoinage and variations (same-side grip, seoitoshi, transitions, etc).

Monday is the start of a new two-week cycle. Maybe kouchigari or te guruma. If there is a specific throw or combination you would like to work on post it to comments.
